A dull symphony of voices leached through the thick, plain, wooden door with a single plaque in the middle that read: Office of Professor Vitter.

Alopecia

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Aminotransferase Enzymes

Swallowing hard, she smoothed out the few stray hairs that freed themselves from her tight black bun. After asking nearly a dozen people throughout the university, someone informed her that Professor Coshot was meeting with Professor Vitter and that she could most likely find him in her office.

All Jade had to do was work up the courage to knock on the door.

Interrupting an important meeting for anything less than the most necessary circumstances would automatically target her for quick dismissal from the university. But it was the most necessary of circumstances, wasn’t it?

Her fist hovered over the door.

Acanthamoeba Keratitis

Achalasia

Achondroplasia

Before she could talk herself out of it, she rapped her knuckles against the wood—three sharp taps infused with urgency.

She retreated a step, waiting for the door to open. The voices inside stopped before the door opened a crack, revealing Professor Vitter’s severe features.

“Yes, Miss Sadore?” No kindness warmed her eyes, though her words were cordial, a clear warning in her penetrating glare. It had better be important.

Jade squared her shoulders. “I have something very important to discuss with Professor Coshot regarding the assigned Shifter’s case.”

Professor Vitter’s dark, hooded eyes narrowed ever so slightly. “I’m sure whatever you need to discuss can wait until he is available.” Professor Vitter made to close the door, but Jade stopped it with her hand before thinking through the action.

Appalled by her brazen gesture, Jade yanked her hand back. “Please, professor. This is urgent.”

Professor Vitter’s eyes darkened as they considered her. The silence stretched on for an eternity, but Jade didn’t back down. She needed to be heard.

After a moment of consideration, Professor Vitter opened the door the rest of the way, stepping back so Jade could enter.

The small office had just enough space for the desk that split the room down the center, an oversized cushioned chair on one side, and two decorative chairs on the other. Professor Coshot occupied one of those decorative chairs, while a Kinetic man Jade didn’t recognize sat in the other.

He was about her age, sitting back in the chair casually, one foot crossed over a knee. He wore a gray suit with perfectly shined shoes, and his gray-green eyes scrutinized her.

“Miss Sadore, how can we help you?” The smallest waver in Professor Coshot’s tone showed how surprised he was by her presence.

Jade’s gaze darted between the unknown man and the professor, carefully selecting her words so as not to stutter. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but I need to talk to you about the Shifter case I’ve been working on.”

The Kinetic’s analyzing gaze held a knowing glint, clear as he hung on every word.

“We are in the middle of something. Can’t this wait?” Hardness edged Professor Coshot’s words, his unchanging expression shadowing.

“That is okay. I think a break is in order, anyway.” The Kinetic man stood, straightening his suit without taking his gray-green eyes off her.
